Meeting Notes from June 9, 2015

President Harold Bauer called the meeting to order.

Announcements

Gary Peterson announced that the International Service Committee will meet on Wednesday, June 10, at 7:15 a.m. at the RI cafeteria.

Elaine Clemens announced that they will be serving at the Harvest Soup Kitchen on June 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. She needs three more volunteers.

Harold Bauer noted that the Club Service Committee, led by Marv Edelstein, prepared a plan, which was presented to and approved by the Board, on educating the club membership on the work involved. The plan also aims at ensuring that everyone plays a role. Marv went over a few points about the plan and stressed the large amount of work involved in running the club affairs.

Harold mentioned that he spoke with Darrell Dixson, whose wife recently suffered a stroke. Darrell confirmed that she is slowly improving, Harold said.

Harold relayed his conversation with Northwestern University’s Parking Division regarding parking during Tuesday’s breakfast meetings. He reminded that members need to display the decals. Several suggestions were made to ensure guests do not receive tickets.

Harold reminded the attendees that there will be no meeting on Tuesday, June 23. The meeting will take place in the early evening for the installation of the new club officers.

Harold announced that a few volunteers from the club are needed for the June 21 Race Against Hate event. He encouraged the club to support the event.

The Fundraising Committee gave an update on the upcoming June 14 fundraising event. They explained the activities that will take place throughout the event. Around 10 a.m., they will need volunteers to assist in setting up the shelter box. They explained the importance of the fundraising as it relates to enabling the club to support all the worthwhile programs throughout the year. Charlotta Koppanyi noted that her participation is a way to give back as she recalled the support she received from Rotary in sponsoring her to come to Chicago. Bill Glader, Fran Caan, and Nancy Phillips explained all the many ways the members should use to ensure attendance is high.

Program

Community Service Roundtable by Julianne Dietrich

Julianne conducted a brainstorming session with the meeting attendees to facilitate the envisioning of the committee’s activities in the coming year. The purpose of the session was to obtain feedback and vision on future projects, to facilitate a more interactive form of meeting, and to focus on strategic planning and club activities in the coming year.

Julianne established the following guidelines to ensure productive exchanges among the attendees:

Share ideas and listen; Open feedback; Constructive feedback and comments. The point was to generate ideas, not the formulation of a plan at this stage.

Each table was assigned a scribe to gather the ideas exchanged. Julianne assigned various topics to the various tables, such as Soup Kitchens, Campus Kitchen.

Julianne also went over the survey responses by the members on their current volunteer engagements outside the club. In general, they center on board membership and committee membership. There were only 20 responses to the survey. Julianne encourages more members to participate in the survey. This will provide key information to the committee about where the interests of the members lie as it relates to community projects.

To facilitate the discussion, Julianne went over all the current ongoing and recurring programs that the committee supports. The scribes at the tables reported some high level comments that were made at the respective tables. Julianne and the committee will gather the information and communicate to the club at a later date.
