Announcements

Steve Goranson announced that the next meeting of the Board will be on Monday, Nov.9, at 6:30 p.m. in his home at 729 Milburn Ave., Evanston.

Steve reminded the members of the upcoming fundraiser by the Wilmette Rotary Club:  Wine, Dine and Dance Around the World, to be held on Friday, Nov. 6, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel in Skokie.  For more information, call (847) 910-4902 or go to www.WilmetteRotary.org.

Gary Peterson announced that the next Golf Road Clean-up will be on Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 8:30 am.  Volunteers will meet in front of the TJ Maxx store on the corner of Golf Road and East Prairie Road.

Raissa Eirich presented the club with a banner from her recent visit to the Dublin Rotary Club.  She gave some background about the club, which is the oldest Rotary club outside of North America, having been founded in 1911.

Kristin Brown again appealed to members to support the End Polio Now campaign by sponsoring her, John Osterlund and Bill Vernon as they ride the El Tour de Tucson 2015 on Nov. 21.  Links to John’s and Kristin’s fundraising pages can be found on the club’s website.

Marv Edelstein announced that the Youth Programs Committee (formerly known as the New Generations Committee) will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Northwestern University, 2133 Sheridan Road, 2nd floor.

Harold Bauer reminded the club members that the next meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 10, would be at the Evanston Arts Center, 1717 Central St., NOT at the Hilton Garden Inn.  The doors will open at 6:30 a.m. Parking is available in the EAC parking lot and on the street.  No need to feed the meters on Central Street  until 9 a.m.

Several announcements related to the Holiday Sale were made:

Harold Bauer encouraged participation because the club’s service efforts, which depend on the sale, were what cemented his interest in the club. Marisa Naujokas announced that she is organizing teams of volunteers to approach businesses throughout Evanston together.  Please contact Marisa if you are interested in being part of a team. Kate Collinson presented several slides which emphasize the point that none of the quarterly funds collected by the club go to support the service projects of the club.  All of those funds must be raised through volunteer efforts in the Holiday Sale, as well as the Taste of Evanston event in June.  Kate will send the slides to the members for use in explaining the importance of the sale to prospective customers. Bruce Baumberger indicated that there is also a great deal of supporting information on the club’s website about the projects that benefit from the proceeds of the sale.

Roasts & Boasts

Ann Searles boasted Raissa Eirich for her willingness to visit another club overseas and exchange banners with the club.

John Osterlund boasted Scott Kaplan for his attendance at the meeting.

Kristin Brown boasted herself for being able to arrange for Scott Kaplan and Louis Allred to present their biographies today, despite Louis’ previous three postponements.

Neil Gambow boasted his granddaughter who is staying with a family in Paraguay, and that family is arranging for her to debut in a party introducing her to society.

Dale Bradley boasted his son, Connor, for finding the correct answer to a math problem, despite his teacher’s insistence to the contrary.  Northwestern University validated Connor’s solution.

Marv Edelstein boasted Gary Peterson for his work in developing Beacon Academy’s interest in sponsoring an Interact club.

Member Bios

Louis Allred

Louis began his biography with his birth and early years in North Carolina from 1931 to 1949.  As a student, Louis established a record of perfect attendance, which he has carried forward into his years as a Rotarian.  Another early accomplishment was becoming an Eagle Scout.  In fact, scouting has meant a great deal to Louis for his entire life.

Louis earned a BS in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina and a PhD in chemistry from Harvard University.  This educational background led to a lifelong career in teaching chemistry at Northwestern University, where he served on numerous committees and administrative appointments.

In addition to his teaching and research, Louis held the positions of department chair, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Acting Vice President for Research, Dean of the Graduate School, and Acting Provost.

In addition to his tenure at Northwestern, Louis also spent a number of summers working at Argonne National Laboratory and various industrial labs.  He was a UNESCO Lecturer in Colombia, South America, and a visiting faculty member at University College London, Cambridge University, and the University of Rome.

Louis has been married to Nancy, a retired ETHS teacher; they have one daughter and two sons.  Louis’ hobbies have included tennis, hiking, travel, reading, and fishing.  He took up running at age 75.  Louis joined Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club on April 30, 1991.  He was first scheduled to present his biography at a club meeting on May 21, 1991, but that presentation was postponed.  He was then scheduled to present his bio in October, 1999, but the program was postponed again.  He finally got his chance today, Nov. 3, 2015!

Scott Kaplan

Scott was born in Chicago at the old Edgewater Hospital and lived in Rogers Park with his family briefly until they moved to Skokie.  He went to Niles North High School, where he acquired his passion for accounting.  Scott went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Indiana University.  After college, he returned to the Chicago area and went to work for Paul Brown (ELRC member) at his firm, which eventually became Brown Kaplan + Liss.  Scott is also a partner with Paul in the recently merged firm now known as Porte Brown, LLC, an accounting and consultancy firm in Evanston.

Scott has been married to Esther for 28 years and lives in Buffalo Grove.  They have a daughter and a son.  Scott is on the board of Turning Point, an outpatient mental health agency in Skokie.  Scott also is on the board of the Kevin Kaplan Foundation, which was established following the death of his brother, Kevin, 21 years ago.

He is an avid sports fan, especially when it comes to the Bears and the Sox; Dale Bradley made a Cubs fan of him as well.  He likes poker and travel.  He and Esther will visit their son, Keith, in the spring when Keith is studying abroad in Barcelona.

Scott joined the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club in 1990 and was one of the first to form the club’s foundation.  He is also proud of having brought Randy Usen into the club.  Scott’s two most important priorities are his family and enjoying life.
