President Steve Goranson called the meeting to order. Bill Glader gave the Thought for the Day.

Announcements

Jackie McGuire, visiting Rotarian and wife of Jim McGuire, announced that the Wilmette Harbor Club is in the midst of its sales fundraiser.  They are selling among other things, wine, smoked fish, and caramel corn.  If you are interested in ordering anything, you can order online or turn in your form to Jackie until Dec. 4.

Elizabeth Newton, Club Chair for the Rotary Foundation, provided information on the second of Rotary’s six approaches to change: eradication of disease. The top priority for Rotary is ending polio, but it has also invested in health camps to address HIV and malaria, and has provided infrastructure to prevent diseases.  Elizabeth explained that there are 100 million people worldwide who have been pushed into poverty due to medical costs.  Our District is sponsoring a fundraising match for The Rotary Foundation in December, and will match any new gift of $500, which will then make you a Paul Harris Fellow.  Elizabeth will provide details of the fundraising effort in an email.

Bruce Baumberger explained that Rotary was active in the founding of the United Nations, and that Rotary Day at the UN is always the first Thursday of the month.  Bruce attended this year with 1,500 other Rotarians, 200 from Zones 28 and 29.  Rotary has the highest non-governmental status possible with the UN.  Bruce also encouraged members to join him at the Lakeside Singers holiday event on Dec. 4. See Bruce for details.

Don Gwinn announced that our club is again going to “Twist Your Dickens” at the Goodman Theatre on Dec. 12 at 4 p.m., with dinner to follow at Lou Malnatis on Roosevelt Road.  According to his son, Peter, who co-wrote the play, it has been modified since last year.  Please let Don know if you are interested in attending; tickets are $20.

Harold Bauer, head of the nominating committee and past president, announced the slate for next year (beginning July 1) as follows:

President: Brad Weiss (previously elected); Past President: Steve Goranson (previously determined); President Elect:  Marv Edelstein; Secretary:  Lesley Peters; Club Treasurer: Don Gwinn (continuing) Susan Prout to take over; Club Foundation Treasurer: Kate Collinson (continuing) Marisa Naujokas to take over; TRF Club Chair:  Elizabeth Newton (continuing);  Program Chair:  Fran Cann; Membership:  Jackie Mack(continuing) Kristin Brown to take over; Club Services: Helen Oloroso (continuing), Youth Services:  Marv Edelstein (continuing); International Service: Yves Lassere (continuing); Community Service: Ken Green (continuing); Vocational Service:  Elaine Clemens; and Publicity: MaLu Simon (continuing).

Holiday Sale Information:  Steve Carlson and Ken Green provided information on the Holiday Sale.  They asked that we try to place fruit orders by next week, although we will order more than what we have sold as of next week.  Marissa Naujokas indicated we are halfway to our sales goal, and that 41 members have participated in the sale so far.  She reminded us that the proceeds go to help the needy.  Ann Searles commented that she had no trouble asking people to buy our products because they are so good. The group pick-up for greenery will be at Anton’s on Dec. 5, although greenery and flowers can be picked up any day, as long as the orders are placed online by noon the day before.  The food pick-up will be Dec. 12 at Subaru of Evanston in Skokie, on Oakton just west of McCormick.  Lots of information on the sale is available on our website. Kate Collinson explained that there is still time to order all products from our holiday sale.  Kate has some pecan products available now and Steve Goranson has some trail mix.

Helen Oloroso reminded that the Holiday Party will be held at the John Evans Alumni Center at Northwestern on Dec. 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 pm.  Members can RSVP via email to her, or through the sign-up sheets on the tables.

Joan Borg announced that the Club Service Committee has decided that everyone will be assigned to set-up and take-down detail, unless you let her know that you cannot do it.

Steve Goranson announced that Charlotta Koppanyi, Bill Glader, Gary Schultz and John Osterlund were receiving pins for bringing in new members, and that John was receiving a bronze pin because he brought in two new members.

Program

The Club Service Committee facilitated a tabletop conversation regarding the Club’s practices at each meeting.  Each table was to discuss and provide feedback on whether we should continue:

Displaying the U.S. flag; saying the Pledge of Allegiance; singing “America the Beautiful”; displaying other club banners; continuing with the sergeant at arm’s trivia questions; continuing the thought for the day; and continuing the Four Way Test. Lively discussions ensued at each table, which were then reflected on a sheet provided by the Committee.
