Meeting of December 19, 2017
Meeting Notes from December 19, 2017

President Marv Edelstein welcomed members to the December 19, 2017 meeting. Suzanne McNamara led club members in reciting the “Why We Are Rotarians” pledge.

Required Club Voting Activity

President Marv announced that he is taking two votes on matters that require club participation.

  1. The proposed change to the by-laws establishing a new Scholastic Membership category, previously presented to the Club, was passed unanimously.

  2. The slate previously presented by the Club Nominating Committee for officers and committee chairs for the 2018-2019 Rotary year was unanimously approved, upon President Marv’s motion.

Announcements

Bill Glader thanked the club members for the donation of food items for the Streetwise employees. He has filled his trunk.

Marissa Naujokas thanked the club for their hard work in making sales for the 2017 Holiday Sale Drive. We are approaching $30,000 in net profit. Please turn in your money if you have not done so yet. We will need additional members to participate in the sale drive next year or it is possible one or more of the sale items might have to be dropped.

Jean Saunders thanked club members for the great ideas presented at last week’s Marv meeting. The next committee meeting will be held January 8, 2018 at her house at 1136 Sherman at 7:15 p.m. All are invited.

Brad Weiss had items that were left at his house the evening of the club holiday party. All items were claimed.

Susan Prout requested that all members “pay up now” what they owe. New bills for club fees will be coming out shortly after the new year.

Bob Teska noted that there was a great article in the current Evanston Roundtable on the recent Youth Leadership Day hosted by our club at Rotary International.

Zbig Skiba discussed the Gift of a Tree for Evanston Parks project. Please share with your neighbors and friends Zbig’s recent email detailing the project. Our goal is to plant one tree for each club member.

Kea Gorden announced that there will be a meeting of the Vocational Service Committee tomorrow, December 20, at 6:15p.m. in the Snug Room at the Celtic Knot. All are invited.

Harold Bauer presented for auction an original Chicago Tribune from November 2016 reporting the Cubs World Series win. Linc Janus purchased it for $10, which Harold donated to the Holiday Sale fund.

Roasts & Boasts

Albert Menard noted that in the next Rotary year the Roast and Boast portion of the weekly club meeting may be restructured. More on this topic in the future.

Don Gwinn boasted himself and Richard Moenning for celebrating their respective 50th anniversaries last Saturday.

Kristin Brown, at Neil Gambow’s request, boasted Ann and John Searles for driving up to Crystal Lake last weekend to pick up and drive home “C”, our exchange student.

Gary Peterson boasted his son for graduating from college and his daughter for being admitted to her first choice, Ohio Wesleyan, and receiving a very good scholarship.

Horton Kellogg noted that Dale Bradley is featured in the current Evanston Magazine.

Ann Searles noted that Dale’s wife, Tracy, is the cover person on the current Evanston Woman magazine.

President Marv presented a gift card to Carmello, our Hilton Gardens wait person, for his wonderful service in setting up our breakfast each week.

Program

GionMathias Schelbert, ETHS,

Mr. Schelbert is the astronomy and astrophysics teacher at ETHS. He is a resident of Evanston and a graduate of Ohio University. He spoke to the club on gravitational waves, specifically the gravitational wave registered on August 17, 2017. This is considered a milestone in astronomy. It was the first recorded collision of neutron stars.

Mr. Schelbert presented a short history of how we gather information from the universe, starting with the telescope. The telescope receives visible light. There are other types of “light,” determined by the wavelength of light,  ranging from radio waves to gamma rays. Another important determinant is the fact that we know of nothing that can exceed the speed of light. This presents a barrier to what we can learn from the universe. For example, we cannot know more about “black holes," because they are so dense that light cannot escape and thus we can receive no information.

Mr. Schelbert then discussed gravity, beginning with Isaac Newton, then on to Albert Einstein. A fairly detailed and complicated explanation of space, time, and gravity and their interactions followed. The net effect is that “ripples” from an astronomical event are sent through space. A collision of two neutron stars is such an event, and generated a wave that was measured at laboratories in Washington, Louisiana, and Italy.  An interferometer is used. He presented an explanation of how this instrument works. The net result is that the recording of the wave from the collision of two neutron stars 120 million years ago resulted in the event of August 17, which was the first time such waves had been measured in this manner. And equally important, this event was confirmed using telescopes, or visible light. This is a significant event in the history of astronomy and astrophysics.
