Meeting of June 6, 2017
Meeting Notes from June 6, 2017

President Brad Weiss welcomed members and guests to the meeting. Thought for the Day, courtesy of Mike Merdinger, included one related to June 6 as Drive-In Movie Day, and two quotes from Dwight Eisenhower due to the day being D-Day.

Announcements:

Ann Searles announced that order forms for Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club polo shirts were emailed to all members last night.  Both men’s sizes and women’s sizes are available in both navy blue and yellow (bright).  Orders are due by email or phone by Thursday, June 8, to ensure delivery in time for July 4th and other summer activities.

Bill Glader made a presentation about Taste of Evanston to be held on July 9 at the Evanston History Center lawn. There are many opportunities to help or underwrite expenses. A trip to the Facebook page for Taste of Evanston was suggested by Marisa Naujokas.  If you go to the event box, indicate whether you are going, and Share with your Facebook friends far and near, many others will become aware of this event.  Also check the website tasteofevanston.org for opportunities to be a benepartner, to hear a bit of the band and other entertainers.  This year’s event has more sponsors and more use of social media.  Even the new mayor of Evanston, Steve Hagerty, is helping out donating a half day with kids so the children will have an idea what the mayor does (followed by lunch with him).

Gary Peterson announced the next chance to clean up along Golf Road will be Saturday, June 17.  Meet at the T J Maxx parking lot at 8:30 am.

Zbig Skiba talked about the incoming RI President’s goal of planting one tree for every Rotarian in the world by Earth Day 2018. He has challenged our club to participate in this great goal.

Helen Oloroso made several announcements on behalf of Club Service. Please help the scribe by giving announcements by paper or email.  Also, please send presentations to Don Gwinn ahead of time and plan to use the club’s equipment.  Joan Borg has already found eight team captains for a new system of club meeting duty assignments beginning July 2017. Duties will be handled by a different team each month.  Helen will be leading a scribe training session in the near future.  All who are even remotely interested are invited to attend to learn how it works.

June 27 there will be no morning club meeting, rather an event at 6:15 pm to install the new club president and thank the old. More info will be forthcoming, but save the date..and the time.

President Brad announced a presentation coming on August 2 at 2 p.m. at Rotary International.  More details later.  Club old and new board meeting Monday, June 19, 7:15 p.m. at Brad’s.

Ilana Seligman is still looking for more volunteers for the soup kitchen on July 3.

Marv Edelstein has put together a list of those attending the convention including hotel names and phone numbers.  Young Leaders Committee Meeting will be held on June 16. He commended the Interact Club at Beacon Academy, which plans to raise $15,000 for Haiti Outreach.

Roasts and Boasts

Zbig Skiba admitted to having made mistakes during his tenure as Sargent.

John Osterlund boasted his son Peter’s graduation from ETHS this past weekend and noted that he will be near Jeff Gardner when he starts college at Tulane next year.

Brad boasted Harold Bauer for collecting money this morning even before any questions were asked.

Program

Betsy Bird, Evanston Public Library

Fran Caan introduced Betsy Bird, Collection Development Manager at the Evanston Public Library, with whom we have worked while picking books given in honor of our unpaid speakers (all of them). She has come to Evanston from the New York Public Library where she was youth materials specialist. She has written several books including recently published “Funny Girl.”

During her 11 years in New York, Betsy noticed a lack of humorous books. Few are written by female authors and there are almost no depictions of humorous girls in any literature. Judy Blume was one of the few authors around when Betsy was growing up who wrote any humor. Girls have not been encouraged to be funny, although experience has shown greater school success by students with a good sense of humor.

Betsy Bird’s book is an anthology of feminine authors with humor. She solicited the stories included in the book in spite of the fact that funny books don’t win awards due to the different senses of humor of the judges. She also sought diversity in the authors included. The book has been out only three weeks and is already in its third printing. The book is listed as appropriate for ages 9 to 12, but Betsy feels that many younger readers can also enjoy it.

The speaker then read one of the stories to the audience.  Called “Godless Germ,” it was written by Carmen Agra Deedy. All were amused at the story.

President Brad noted that a copy of the book Funny Girl will be presented to the Evanston Public Library in honor of today’s speaker.
