Bruce Baumberger announced that he has two tickets for the Northwestern University men’s basketball game vs. the University of Illinois Springfield for Nov. 4. Contact Bruce if you are interested in the tickets.

Bruce also gave an update on the status of the End Polio campaign, with only 27 cases remaining worldwide and no new cases in the past two months. He reminded the club that Kristin Brown will be riding in the “Miles to End Polio” ride in Tucson on Nov. 19, along with Rotary General Secretary, John Hewko, and a team of Rotary staffers. Contributions to the End Polio campaign can be made in Kristin’s name at the donation page.

Gary Peterson announced that the final Golf Road Clean-up day will be on Saturday, Nov. 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in front of TJ Maxx on Golf Road.

Brad also announced that District 6440’s dinner celebrating the Rotary Foundation’s 100th Anniversary will be held on Nov.13 in Arlington Heights. Details are on the district’s website.

Brad also thanked Fran Caan, Dave Simmons, and Kathy Tate Bradish for attending the One Rotary Summit in October. Kathy talked about feeling energized by the great ideas that were shared, especially around membership and the foundation.

Brad Weiss announced that there are opportunities for those interested in the District 6440 International Service trips to Guatemala in February or March; more information is available on the district's website.

Steve Goranson announced that the Nominating Committee for the 2017-18 Rotary year has been formed. In addition to Steve, who as Immediate Past President will chair the committee, other members include Brad Weiss, Bruce Baumberger, Marv Edelstein and Kate Collinson. The committee welcomes suggestions for candidates and will present their slate to the club on Dec. 1.

Special Presentation

Kristin Brown, on behalf of the Holiday Sale committee, gave their weekly “Holiday Minute” updates. A new feature of the sale is the presence of a “Help Desk,” which will be at the meetings throughout the drive. Marisa Naukokas has set up a poster display with extensive information about the sale and will be available to answer questions that members may have. The committee will also have a calendar projected on the screen each week, with updates.

Kristin stressed the upcoming deadlines: Nov. 10 for Thanksgiving orders, and Nov. 19 as
the pickup date for those orders.

Bruce Baumberger has the customer lists developed by former club members and will make them available to those who would like to contact those individuals. Bruce also stressed the importance of completing SEPARATE forms for Thanksgiving and Christmas orders because they will have separate pickup dates.

Program

The Floured Apron - Speaker: Lauren LeBoyer, Program Director

Lauren gave us an overview of the program and then showed a brief video of the staff and students in The Floured Apron program. Founded by Emily Boling, The Floured Apron is an intensive 10-week training program focusing on building food service and life skills through a hands-on curriculum, workshops, field trips and individual mentoring designed to help women who want to change their lives.

Participants in the program learn to make all-natural baked goods that are then sold in several north suburban locations, including the Grand Foods market on Green Bay Road in Winnetka. Products are developed and baked in the commercial kitchen at the Winnetka Congregational Church and are also available through catered orders. Following the ten-week program, women usually find employment in the Chicago area, often with such employer partners as Mariano’s, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, Whole Foods, and Curt’s Café in Evanston.

The most important features of this program are the successes that the women experience through participation. They have great pride in the products they make and the recipes that they develop. Through working together, they also work out problems and issues that have been impediments to success in the past. Self-esteem is the best by-product of the baking enterprise.

The Floured Apron is always looking for volunteers, mentors, field trip sites and donations. Lauren mentioned that one of the organization’s ties to the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club is through Elaine Clemens, who serves on its board. Although the organization is only a year old, 20 graduates have finished the program and 90 percent have found jobs with the help of the program.
