Program

Speaker: Pam Watson, Chief Executive Officer, Rimland Collaborative Care for Individuals with Autism

In honor of April as Autism Month, Kathy Tate-Bradish introduced her friend and colleague, Pam Watson, as uniquely qualified to speak on the subject of individuals with autism. Pam has been at Rimland since 1985 and has lived out the vision of the founder, Rosalind Oppenheim, in creating an environment that provides a lifelong commitment to individuals with autism.

Rimland provides community based living facilities throughout the metro Chicago area, with two-thirds of those homes in Evanston. Eighty Evanston residents with autism live together in family style settings, with four residents and several support staff in each home. The most important feature of Rimland’s approach is that the environments, programs, and services are all adapted to the unique needs of each individual resident and are designed to establish routines and skills that help residents achieve full,
whole lives in the community.

Autism is a pervasive condition that affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys. It is the fastest growingdevelopments disorder in the U.S., has no cure, and requires lifelong care. Rimland’s residents are all adults who have matriculated out of every other private and public school and/or organization. Rimland has been supporting the most critical needs of adults with classic autism through three programs: residential living; developmental training, and health and wellness.

One of Pam’s colleagues, Terrance Wimberly (Associate Director for Client Services) conducted an exercise with club members in which we learned what some of the most severe communications challenges are when individuals with autism have a vocabulary that could be limited to as few as five words. Because of the inherent frustration of these limitations, many individuals with autism communicate with socially adverse behaviors and are often misunderstood.
