Meeting Notes for November 22, 2016

President Brad Weiss convened the meeting and Paul Brown gave the thought for the day regarding gifts of giving thanks and sharing.

Announcements

Marissa Naujokas reminded members of upcoming deadlines and dates for the Holiday Sale. Sign-up sheets were on the tables for volunteers for both the flower pickup at Anton’s on Dec. 3  and food pickup at Evanston Subaru on December 10.

Jackie McGuire of the Rotary Club of Wilmette Harbor announced that her club’s annual fundraiser,“Gifts for the Holidays,” included many items, such as wine, that would go well with the food for sale in our own Holiday Sale. Order forms and an information sheet were distributed.

“Sunshine Lady,” Ann Searles, announced that she had recently heard from John Wold, a former member and his wife, Marge, who now live in Minnesota. They are doing well and happy to be close to their grandchildren, but they miss Evanston and the club.

Brad Weiss announced that the board approved an increase of $2 in the price of a guest breakfast, from $18 to $20. This will reflect the actual cost of the breakfast. No change in price for member breakfasts is anticipated at this time.

Brad Weiss also announced that there will be NO club meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 27, or on Jan.. 10.

Steve Steiber announced that several board members have agreed to give a $10 match to any member who has never given a gift to The Rotary Foundation prior to Jan. 1, 2015. This could potentially result in a credit to that member’s TRF giving of as much as $100.

Kate Collinson urged members to encourage the purchase of citrus products during the Holiday Sale. Reassure disappointed customers from last year that the oranges are from a source in California and are very high quality.

Roasts & Boasts

Yves Lassare boasted Gary Peterson for his involvement in Haiti Outreach and for having just been elected to the position of Treasurer and Chair of its Finance Committee.

Fully Alive

Speaker: Jack Alschuler, Chief Alive Officer, Fully Alive Leadership

A consultant to businesses, Mr. Alschuler specializes in helping chief executive officers get the most out of their employees.

As the Chief Alive Officer of  Fully Alive, Jack presents motivating, engaging, and informative keynote presentations and workshops designed to inspire leaders to be the best they can be.  That drives employee engagement, employee retention, and delivers the greatest success.

"And that’s what you want," he says.

Employee engagement, he notes, has been the buzz for several years, especially in HR circles.  It’s all about the level of discretionary effort employees are giving, and he says the statistics are "dreadfully poor."  Only about 18 percent are giving their best, while about 20 percent are “actively disengaged.”  That means that they are doing just enough to avoid being fired or, worse, they are causing discontent among your other employees.

The remainder are somewhere in the middle of the bell curve, and it’s staggering, he says, what it costs to let them languish there.

One piece of advice he offered was to avoid micromanaging your employees. It is much better, he said, to have a conversation with that employee and give him or  her a specific job to do, ask a few questions to make sure they're on the right track, then let them loose to get the job done. He said these same principles can be applied to managing one's teenagers.

"Don't try to micromanage their homework," he advised.
