Meeting Notes for Tuesday, June 14, 2016

President Steve Goranson welcomed members and guests to the meeting. After a moment of silence for the victims of the recent Orlando tragedy, a Thought for the Day was offered by Ann Searles. In honor of Flag Day, Ann quoted Charles Sumner (1811-1874): “There is the national flag. He must be cold, indeed, who
can look upon its folds rippling in the breeze without pride of country. White for purity, red for valor, blue for justice, the flag of our country, to be cherished by all our hearts, to be upheld by all our hands.”

Announcements

Steve Goranson thanked all those who helped with today’s meeting. Steve also thanked the Taste of Evanston Committee for their amazing efforts in putting together Sunday’s successful party/fundraiser. The Committee -- Bill Glader, MaLu Simon, Linda Gerber, Charlotta Koppanyi, Dale Bradley, Brad Weiss, Ilana Seligman – did an incredible job, staging a wonderful fellowship event. It’s not too late to participate! Donations to the Taste of Evanston are still being accepted. Please contact Kate Collinson if you’d like to make a monetary contribution to this worthwhile effort. Bill Glader thanked everyone who sponsored, volunteered, bought tickets, invited guests, attended and publicized the Taste of Evanston. In addition to funding our club’s own philanthropy locally and abroad, proceeds of TOE will help Hillside Pantry and the Hunger Resource Network reduce food insecurity on the North Shore.

Elizabeth Newton, Club Chair for The Rotary Foundation, noted that there are only 17 days left during which to make a 2016-2017 Foundation gift. Contributions to date of $12,000 represent roughly 75% of our $16,000 goal. Many members choose to give during the month of June. It’s time! One of Rotary’s six
areas of focus, Education is an important priority for The Rotary Foundation. Working to improve access for 67 million children, Rotary seeks to strengthen the capacity of local communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity and increase adult literacy. Thanks to those who have already given. Please consider making a contribution in the coming weeks!

Zbig Skiba, Yves Lassere and Elaine Clemens met recently to discuss opportunities for networking within our club, and with other clubs. Zbig announced that a meeting will be held on July 27 at 6:30 p.m. to continue these exploratory discussions. All are welcome. The meeting will be held at Bradley Investment
Center  Central Street and Central Park Avenue.

International Service Committee Chair Yves Lassere announced that the committee will  meet on Thursday, June 16, at 7:15 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Rotary International Building.

Harold Bauer cited the importance of our newsletter, The Light. With the upcoming turnover in Board responsibilities, we are losing several scribes to other positions. Taking notes and writing them up for The Light is a small inconvenience, but it is an important task that keeps members apprised of club activities and
actions. Please consider helping (typically, once every 4-6 weeks) with this vital job. To volunteer, please contact Helen Oloroso (Club Service) or Joan Borg (Duty Roster Coordinator).

Sunshine Lady Ann Searles explained that Ken Green had successful robotic heart surgery recently. After a few days at home, Ken is currently back in St. Francis with a pulmonary embolism. Ken expects to make a complete recovery, but needs some time to heal. As announced earlier, Gerry Baumann recently broke his leg and underwent surgery yesterday. We hope that Ken and Gerry will be back with us soon.

Marisa Naujokas provided a Sunshine Lady addendum. EiricRaissa  had eye surgery recently and also moved. Per Marv Edelstein, she hopes to be with us soon (when her ‘Rotary clothes’ are unpacked)!

Elaine Clemens announced that extra food from the Taste of Evanston event was delivered to A  Just Harvest in Chicago.

Roasts and Boasts

Zbig Skiba explained the Roast and Boast tradition to our visiting guests.

Joan Borg noted that she tries to patronize businesses that support our club’s fundraising. Boasting herself, she’s found that the folks at Vinic Wine now recognize her!

Brad Weiss roasted Harold Bauer. In Seoul for the recent Rotary convention, Brad met Ada, a young woman who had visited our club in the past. At that time, she had wanted to exchange club banners, but President Harold Bauer was not available to participate. In her words, “you owe me a flag.” Ada provided
Brad a flag from her own club and he will now send her one of ours!

Neil Gambow announced that his traveling granddaughter -- who has been a Rotary Scholar in Paraguay – will be coming to our club on July 26.

Ann Searles boasted “funny man” Dick Moenning. In line for a theatre event, Ann overhead someone saying “Maybe I’m supposed to be at the Symphony.” That man was Dick, who was later spotted greatly enjoying the play.

Howard Bauer boasted Yves Lassere for his very capable and reasoned leadership of the International Service Committee.

Dale Bradley, in his first year on the Taste of Evanston committee, reported that he actually looked forward to going to meetings. He boasted the entire committee for their hard work and singled out Bill Glader and MaLu Simon for their ongoing efforts to keep everything organized and running smoothly.

John Searles boasted the event and its food. “Amazingly good!”

Charlotta Koppanyi boasted the many TOE sponsors, both inside and outside the club. She encouraged members to patronize the businesses that supported the event, thanking them for their backing. Charlotta also thanked Linda Gerber for her tireless efforts on behalf of the event. Linda dealt with many of the
event’s biggest challenges – staffing, insurance, health permits, city relations, and last minute changes.

Last, but not least, Bill Glader boasted Charlotta for her very capable oversight of the event’s auctions and raffle!

Community Service Grant Awards

Ann Searles welcomed our grant recipients to the meeting, pinch-hitting for recovering Community Service Chair Ken Green. Ann noted that we spend most of the year raising funds and are pleased to have this opportunity to give those hard-earned dollars away.

The giving theme for this year: Support organizations and programs that help improve the quality of life for Evanston residents most in need. Proposals in the areas of education, hunger, homelessness, employment and health will receive priority consideration.

Each recipient organization and representative were then introduced and given the opportunity to speak very briefly.
