Meeting of 18 April 2017
Meeting Notes from April 18, 2017

President Brad Weiss welcomed members to the meeting.  Horton Kellogg offered some Thoughts for (Tax) Day from Will Rogers.  “It’s a good thing that we don’t have as much government as we pay for.” “The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf has.”

Announcements

Brad Weiss announced that the meeting order would be flipped to accommodate the RYLA attendees’ need to get to school.

Marv Edelstein noted that this is a special time for Rotary as the Foundation celebrates the 100th Anniversary of its founding.  A brief Rotary video touched on the highlights of the first hundred years, beginning with President Arch Klumph’s proposal for an Endowment at the 1917 Rotary Convention.  To date, more than $3 billion has been spent by the Foundation on worthwhile projects in the key areas of disease prevention, water and sanitation, child and maternal health, education, economic development, and peace and conflict resolution.  It’s important to remember that every project begins with one person’s idea.  “Vision to see, faith to believe, courage to act.”

Brad thanked both Marv Edelstein and District 6440 RYLA Chair Sean Nelson for their commitment to the RYLA program.  Involved with RYLA for 16 years, Sean has overseen its growth into the largest (and best!) RYLA effort in the world.  Sean thanked Evanston Lighthouse Rotarians for their support of the program (23 students sponsored by our club attended sessions this spring) and voiced his personal appreciation for the chance to “see the fruits of our donations.”  Marv has worked tirelessly to boost RYLA interest and attendance.

District Governor Rick Rivkin noted that RYLA speaker Rick Metzger will be the Keynote Speaker on Saturday night at the upcoming District Conference.  Beginning Friday, April 28, and concluding on Sunday, April 30, the Conference is a wonderful opportunity to learn, socialize, and be inspired.  It’s not too late to register!  Held at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort, the Conference will feature speakers, wonderful meals, break-out sessions, awards, and a 7K Run/3K Walk.  (And to those participating in ELRC’s Rebuilding Together project during the same weekend, Rick stressed that it’s possible to do both!)

Gary Peterson announced that the first Golf Road Cleanup of the season will take place on Saturday, May 6, at 8:30 a.m.  As usual, the group will meet in the T.J. Maxx parking lot.

Brad Weiss announced that the next Board meeting will be held in his home on Wednesday night, April 19, at 7:15 p.m.  All members are encouraged to attend.

Steve Steiber reminded members that the Rotary Foundation needs our financial assistance to continue its good work.  An impressive 91% of Foundation funds support projects around the world.  Polio eradication is an obvious example of Rotary’s strength and reach. With just a handful of cases in three countries, the scourge of polio is nearly over.  Now is a particularly good time to consider becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.  A generous Rotarian has offered to match gifts of $500 to the Foundation – and the Gates Foundation will further match all gifts.  For more information, please contact Steve

Recently back from Guatemala, Don Gwinn is taking orders for coffee from a local Guatemalan Rotary Club.  If you’d like to purchase this coffee by the pound, please contact Don.  Don also reminded members that Rebuilding Together will take place during the April 28-29 weekend.  More details will be forthcoming.
Ann Searles encouraged members who have agreed to volunteer at the May 5 Aging Well Conference to register online for the sessions in which they’re interested.  Our own Charlotta Koppanyi will be leading a hands on session exploring the benefits of communal art work and story creation.

Joan Borg circulated sign-up sheets for a Fellowship Dinner on Wednesday, April 26, 6:30 p.m., at Union Pizzeria, 1245 Chicago Ave.  There are openings for 12 interested members, friends, and spouses.  Union Pizzeria has been a loyal participant in the Taste of Evanston.

Charlotta Koppanyi urged members to consider donations to the Taste of Evanston Silent Auction and Raffle on July 9.   The Committee is seeking items of all types, as well as services, gift certificates, etc.  These will be used to raise funds for our beneficiaries.

Brad thanked members for their flexibility with the morning’s logistical challenges.  (For those not in attendance, the business portion of the meeting and program were held in one room, with breakfast enjoyed in two other rooms.)

Roasts & Boasts

Helen Oloroso boasted Marv Edelstein for checking on room arrangements for today’s meeting in advance.  Marv learned that our normal room was unavailable and cobbled together a workable solution.

Participant Feedback After Attending RYLA

Sixteen RYLA participants (and their parents) attended our weekly meeting and shared their thoughts on the experience.  Prompted by questions from Marv Edelstein, the students from ETHS, Beacon Academy, and St. Ignatius talked about camp arrival, a provocative speaker, obstacle course challenges, and personality/leadership style assessment.  RYLA attendees hail from urban and suburban areas, from public and private schools.  Despite their outward differences, there was much common ground.  Small groups pulled together to accomplish tasks and entertain their fellow participants.  In an atmosphere of mutual respect, they learned to capitalize on their personal strengths and collaborate with others for the benefit of all.  It was clear that these engaged and energetic students enjoyed their experience and profited immensely from it.

RYLA participants regaled us with tales of their Wisconsin experiences.
