Special Presentation

Marisa Naujokas gave a presentation on the workings of Facebook and, in particular, the Club’s Facebook and Taste of Evanston home pages. She began explaining how Facebook works, including a person’s homepage, posts, newsfeeds, friends, and the “likes” function. From there, she showed her homepage, the club’s Facebook home page and Taste of Evanston home page, and how her homepage and the homepages for the club and Taste of Evanston can be interlinked with one another.

She encouraged members who have not already done so to set up a Facebook account; find friends and family members on Facebook, and send friend requests to them; “like” the club’s Facebook and Taste of Evanston pages; and share posts from the club’s and Taste of Evanston’s home pages so that friends can see them.

Marcia Kazurinsky Bio

Marcia gave and performed her autobiography for the club. She said that she had a difficult time preparing it because other biographies she had heard had been very inspiring; they depicted a life of service to others. In her case she spent a life in show business and she could only talk about the shows she was in and how fabulous she was!

Marcia grew up in a small town in Michigan and went to college with the intention of becoming a music teacher. After graduating in 1971, she visited a friend in New York City and attended a performance of “No, No, Nanette” staring Ruby Keeler. After seeing it, she auditioned (for the first time in her life) for the national touring company production staring June Allyson and Dennis Day. She won a part because she could do everything required, from singing to tap dancing on three-foot high concrete beach balls to cart wheeling. When Virginia Mayo replaced Allyson as the lead, Marcia provided the off-stage tap dancing sounds because Mayo did not know how to tap dance.

Marcia’s next job involved performing in “Good News” staring John Payne, Alice Faye, and Stubby Kaye, who actually replaced Eddie “Rochester” Anderson. Rochester was so old he could not remember a single line. Marcia said he was a really nice man, but the production company had to let him go.

A key moment in Marcia’s career involved staring in “A Chorus Line” as Maggie who sings, “Everything is Beautiful at the Ballet.” Marcia starred both in Broadway and tour productions. When the touring company went to Japan, Shinto priests blessed the stage before the show opened. One night, Emperor Akihito attended the show and came back stage to meet the cast. The Japanese dressing rooms had tables on the floor and bathrooms with holes in the floor.

As wonderful as “A Chorus Line” was artistically, Marcia said that the show that most won her heart was “On Your Toes” starring the Russian ballerina Natalia Nakarova. The legendary director Goeorge Abbott, who was 95 years old at the time, directed while the equally legendary George Ballanchine provided the choreography. Maria recounted how, during one rehearsal, he asked her to demonstrate a step with him by kicking over his head. Instead Marcia kicked him in the head, but she still stayed in the show.

Marcia also recounted she worked with Kitty Carlisle –a.k.a. Mrs. Moss Hart – in this same show and shared a dressing room with her. Marcia said Carlisle had the world’s weirdest vocal warm-up exercises, standing up in her girdle and flapping her arms. At one point, she and Marcia attended a “Saturday Night Live” show together with tickets given to her by Marcia’s then friend, Tim Kazurinsky, a star on the show.

Not long after that, Marcia and Tim married, had a couple of kids, and Marcia’s life on stage transitioned to a new phase. Marcia said she had a wonderful time on stage, but that her career pales in comparison to what Rotary does. So, in closing, she sang an amended version of the finale song  she has sung more than 1,000 times for “A Chorus Line” in order to celebrate Rotary and pay homage to the advice her mother always gave: “Dare to Be Different.”
