Meeting Notes from October 12, 2021
The Light for October 12, 2021

By Katherine Peterson

Today we set aside our regular weekly meeting to take time to honor our beloved friend, Linc Janus, and remember a life full of stories and achievements. We thought about the ways he touched our lives and reflected on the impact he had on our club and in the community. Everyone was invited to share appreciations of Linc.  Helen Oloroso presided at today’s remembrances.

After reciting “Why We Are Rotarians?” Jim McGuire  gave us the Thought for the Day in celebration of Linc.

Please note:  The following Roasts & Boasts were not presented in today’s meeting.

Albert Menard would like to boast John Searles, Louis Allred, and Anne Menard for helping him with the Golf Road pickup Saturday, Oct. 9.  In 90 minutes, this group picked up six large bags of trash.

Ann Searles boasted for Kathy Tate-Bradish, who composed the email which Ann sent to all of you informing you of Lincoln Janus’s death last week. She did a wonderful job.
Ann Searles roasted herself for adding a line to credit her work and then clicking on Send without realizing she had not saved the acknowledgement.

Program

Topic: In Memory of Linc Janus

Karen Bauer sang a deeply touching “Amazing Grace” to honor dear friend and esteemed Rotarian, Linc Janus.

Helen Oloroso shared many highlights of Linc’s life.  Although he joined EVLRC in 2015 as a Rotarian, he had a profound effect on the members of our club.  His tenure as club secretary was notable for his thoroughness, kindness, and integrity of convictions.   His belief that “You can’t do service without fellowship” was noted by many who were honored to be his friend.
He handled his Rotary roles with panache, grace, and style. Linc was also noted, among many other things, as a true father-like figure to exchange student, Potter. He was recognized with his spouse and Associate Member, Myra Janus, for providing a bedrock of support to Potter during his exchange year during the COVID-19 Pandemic.  They became Rotarians of the Year in 2019-20.  Linc received multiple Paul Harris Awards, never allowing the club to announce this fact, and came very close to becoming an RI Major Donor.

Many members touched upon their appreciation of Linc’s ability to step up when needed as a viable and thoughtful member of the community.  He golfed regularly, and enthusiastically with Rotary colleagues, enjoying the game as well as taking it seriously.  He was described as “the perfect neighbor.” He joined Rotary in his early retirement, and quickly become a valued member who served unfailingly whenever needed.  Members proclaimed Linc a man of many talents, known for his modesty, and keen intelligence.  Rotary colleagues celebrated his many talents and his ability to care.

Although a Rotary member for a relatively short time, Linc was noted for his kindness by a great many colleagues.  His fearless ability to speak his mind was celebrated and appreciated.  He generously shared his legal skillfulness which was utilized in kindness and was fair to all concerned.  He was noted as especially instrumental in sensitive matters, and embodied The Four Way Test.  Linc was also known for his ability to be thoughtful and welcoming to members who appreciated the authenticity of his care and attention.  Among many other interests was his love of old cars, including a Karrman Ghia.

Linc most especially spoke with pride of his family, children, and grandchildren.  Linc’s company was enjoyed by so many, and members proclaimed a depth of pleasure in fellowship with him.  Many lives were touched by this caring and fair man, and it was universally proclaimed that Linc was a friend to many and will be sorely missed.

Some notable quotes from members who celebrated Linc’s friendship and camaraderie:
  • “….. had a deep relationship with a refugee family, who still feels like family.”
  • A Linc golfing axiom:  “At the end of the round nobody is going to remember what you shot, but how you reacted to it.”
  • “I miss knowing he’s there.”
  • “We all will remember Linc’s wonderful presence, intelligence, and caring.”
  • “He was such a beloved community member, and I will always remember him for all his kind gestures.”
  • “I knew what we all know, that Linc was special and authentic and I loved having those experiences with him.”
  • “I enjoyed being with him, seeing him in charge, he was a no-nonsense guy who took care of things.”
  • “Honorable.”
Myra Janus shared that Linc would have been delighted to hear this presentation.

In honor of Linc, Helen Oloroso closed with the Four Way Test.

A copy of today’s Zoom video and transcript was provided to Myra.
