Program

Topic: Optimizing Health During Covid-19

Speaker: Dr. Debra Brunk, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC

It should be noted that Dr. Brunk’s powerpoint presentation is available with the recording of the meeting that was sent out this week.

Those individuals who are at highest risk of severe illness and death are those (1) with chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease; (2)  are older adults; and (3)  are obese.

To minimize risk it is important to reduce exposure, minimize inflammation, and support the body’s viral surveillance and immune system.

Signs of inflammation might include arthritic joints, skin reactions, mucus and coughing, and insomnia. Inflammation in COVID-19 can lead to organ damage. Causes of inflammation can include poor diets (fast foods), processed foods, sugar, bad fats, food intolerances, high blood sugar, stress, poor sleep, low grade infections, and toxins in our environment.

For gut health and to minimize inflammation, you can eat foods that are high in fiber, plant based, low in sugar, use probiotics and avoid toxins. To improve sleep you can exercise more, reduce caffein consumption, reduce screen time, and use Melatonin, which is an anti-inflammatory. You can also sleep in a cooler environment.

To manage stress, practice breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, journaling; engage in activities including enjoying nature, sewing, art, music, and other activities.

She suggested taking good quality supplements without too many fillers. These could include Vitamin D, Omega 3 fish oil, vitamin C, Zinc (15 mg.-30 mg. per day), Curcumin, Astragalus. She recommends turmeric, Reishe mushrooms( in teas, or supplements). Oily fish such as salmon or sardines do not always provide enough Omega 3, so supplements may be necessary, but don’t overdo it. Too much Vitamin A can be toxic. Look for vitamins that are labeled GMP for good manufacturing practices and check the ingredient levels.  Also avoid charred meat and buy wild caught salmon.
