The Light for September 5, 2023

By Kate Collinson

President Bryant Wallace welcomed members to the meeting.   Harold Bauer led the group in the Statement of Purpose and shared his feelings about giving and impact in the world.  Our Rotary Club repeatedly reminds him how tiny groups of people can achieve great things.  Many ‘ones’ can and DO make a difference!  In that spirit, please contribute what you can (time, talent, treasure) to the Taste of Evanston, the core group of which have been working diligently for months to address housing insecurity in Evanston.

Announcements

Noting that we are less than two weeks from the Taste of Evanston, Bill Glader announced that more than 330 tickets have been sold. It’s important that we keep selling!  On Saturday, a large group of volunteers promoted TOE at Farmers Market. Kate Collinson thanked Myra Janus, Jean Saunders, Bill Glader, Ann Weatherhead, Bruce Baumberger, Mark Werwath, Linda Gerber, Brien Johnson, Steve Goranson, and Harold Bauer for giving up part of their Saturday. We will be there again this Saturday from 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Please contact Kate if you’re interested in volunteering from 7:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. or 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Bill also aired a very effective video clip from Monday’s WGN Midday News, showcasing TOE offerings from a number of restaurants and beverage purveyors.  Thanks to our ‘on stage’ talent (Bill!) and our set designer/restaurant coordinator extraordinaire Linda Gerber.   To see the video clip, please click here.

Raffle Chair Georgia Vlahos has collected more than $900 in advance raffle ticket sales and encouraged members to continue selling tickets ($10 each, 3 for $25). Please reach out to Georgia with questions, ticket needs, and completed stubs.

Silent Auction Chair Helen Oloroso explained that volunteers will be needed on Taste day to help with set-up, payment/pick-up, and assisting potential bidders in using their phones with the bidding website.  Please respond positively if Dan, Jose or Bruce ask you to take a shift.

Restaurant maven Linda Gerber asked members to thank TOE restaurants whenever possible!

Bryant offered his thanks to all TOE volunteers – and appealed to all members to step up and pitch in.

The Taste of Evanston Committee will meet (for the last time before TOE) on Monday, Sept. 11, at Firehouse Grill at 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. for the meeting.

Jose Lopez is overseeing the visit of 18 Rotarians from the Dominican Republic to our area from September 29 – October 4. The delegation includes current and former leaders of District 4060, which includes 60 Rotary clubs.  A very full visit, they are scheduled to tour Chicago, visit Paul Harris’ house and grave, participate in workshops at RI, visit local non-profits, and attend several club meetings in our district.  It’s important that we welcome them warmly!  More details will be forthcoming.

Blue Badge Presentation

Bryant lauded the new members who have completed their blue badge requirements -- Mark Werwath, Jeff Snyder, Jose Lopez, Elizabeth Goodbody, Jason Kaiser, and Stuart Cleland.   Without exception, they have jumped in and involved themselves quickly in club activities.   We are grateful for their membership!
