When Steve Carlson joined the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club in 1998, no one could have imagined the impact that he would have.  Steve embodied Rotary's "Service Above Self" mission, participating actively in virtually all Rotary areas.  Leadership opportunities arose quickly as he was tapped for Secretary (2000-2002) and Membership Chair (2001-2002), while also participating actively on Community Service and International Service Committees.  

 

Steve was selected Club President during the 2005-2006 club year, concurrently serving as President of United Community Services of Evanston, the parent organization of the United Way.  Steve eventually led the International and Community Service Committees and was a critical member of the Holiday Sale team.  As the ELRC began to create and execute more sophisticated international projects, Steve shepherded a 3-H Grant (Health, Hunger & Humanity) which built 21 water wells at school sites in Nigeria, provided water sanitation and hygiene training, and created Interact Clubs in the affected schools.  Steve traveled to Nigeria to assess progress and report back to the Club.

 

When the decision was made to celebrate the ELRC's 25th Anniversary in 2010 with a memorable local project, Steve was instrumental in planning the multi-year funding and overseeing the project ideation process.  After extensive research, brainstorming and vetting, the ELRC fully funded the renovation of the inadequate kitchen of the YWCA Battered Women's Shelter, providing residents an inviting and safe space. 

 

It is very difficult to find an aspect of ELRC volunteerism that didn't include Steve.  We are forever grateful.

 

The ELRC is pleased to accept donations in his memory so that the projects he valued will continue.
